Behind a last-second field goal from junior kicker Fernando Machuca, Christ School earned its first win of the season with a 38-35 road victory over Rabun Gap (Ga.) Saturday afternoon.
Machuca's 31-yard field goal as time expired moved the Greenies to a 1-2 overall record and gave them a split in the season series against the Eagles, who defeated Christ School 24-21 at home on Sept. 25.
“I was fine. My heart was beating a little fast, but other than that, I was good," Fernando said in a media release. "This means everything. We’re just glad to finally get one, we’ve had two losses. One was a real heartbreaker and the other one was on the road. We needed this.”
Christ School lost 35-21 to South Carolina powerhouse Abbeville last week.
It was senior Cade Mintz who led the offense Saturday, finishing with two rushing touchdowns from two and 50 yards and adding another seven-yard touchdown reception from quarterback A.J. Simpkins.
Simpkins added a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and junior running back Bryce Sain opened the scoring in the first quarter with a six-yard touchdown run.
Christ School (1-2) will try to build on Saturday’s win when it travels to Metrolina Christian (1-3) for a 7 p.m. game Oct. 23.
