Lady Falcons, Crusaders score wins on rivalry night

SANFORD — Jesse Mitchell poured in 43 points, with 25 coming in the second half in the midst of a Crusader comeback, and Grace Christian beat neighborhood and conference rival Lee Christian 70-64 Friday night at Grace Christian’s Torgerson Gymnasium. In the girls’ game earlier in the evening, freshman Kelyce McSwain powered the Lady Falcons with 19 points and Lee Christian won 45-41.
In the boys’ game, the Crusaders rallied from 12 down starting the second half and as much as 14 down early in the third quarter.
Grace Christian (14-12, 4-1) cut a 44-30 deficit to a 49-45 Falcon lead at the end of the third quarter.
A flurry of three-pointers, three by Mitchell, then one by center Ma’kyi Butler, made it 58-53 Crusaders with just under five minutes left in the game.
Mitchell hit four three-pointers on the night, but did most of his work driving strong to the basket or working for rebounds and second-chance baskets. Butler added 17 points.
For the Falcons, guard Sayvion Ellis scored 27 points and guard Quez Rochelle scored 16 points.

21-0 run from midway in the first quarter through the first three minutes of the second quarter, racing out to a 29-16 lead.
The Lady Falcons (12-4, 8-0) led from partway through the first quarter through the rest of the contest. The Lady Falcons led 26-15 at the end of the half, then led by as large an advantage as 41-28 early in the fourth quarter.
McSwain and fellow post player Taylor Woods, who added 10 points, dominated the boards, especially for second-, third- and fourth-shots.
The Lady Crusaders rallied in the last three minutes, getting within a two-possession game but couldn’t get closer.
Kaleigh Wilson scored 13 points with Lara Lieckfeld scoring 12 and McKensie Boyte scoring 10 for Grace Christian.
