HENDERSON -- The Kerr-Vance Academy Spartans girls basketball team took their third consecutive loss of the season on Tuesday after Lee Christian took advantage of their poor ball control and defense to bring home a 56-29 victory.

The Lady Spartans were forced to play without one of their top contributors during the final three quarters in Cheyenne Owen, who had to attend a volleyball practice.

“We played great in the first quarter,” Foster said. “The defense really came out and we had a lot of energy, but after that, we just slowly started fading away. Once [Cheyenne] left, everything just unraveled for us.”

Offense would be an issue for both teams to start the game, with the Lady Falcons scoring the first points of the game two minutes in after getting through the KVA defense for a clear jump shot.

The Lady Spartans started to generate some offense after draining two three-point shots, staying in front of the Lady Falcons 10-9 heading into the second quarter.

Despite holding the lead for half of the second quarter, the Lady Spartans began to make careless ball handling decisions after Owen left the game, allowing Lee Christian to open a 10-point lead at halftime.

The Lady Falcons held KVA to just two points in the third quarter as their defense shut down any scoring opportunities, while their offense continued to drive the ball inside.

Lady Falcons head coach Donna Taylor began inserting her reserves into the active rotation near the end of the third quarter. They picked up from where the starters left off on both offense and defense to close out an efficient evening for the team.

Foster said he is still trying to sort through all of the issues plaguing the team at the halfway point of the 2019-20 season, but he knows his players are putting in the necessary effort and is confident a breakthrough will come sooner rather than later.

“We’re still operating in spurts,” Foster said. “Everything is still getting put back together for us, but we had a very positive team meeting after the game, and I think we’re going to start playing much better going forward.”

The Lady Spartans will not have much time to regroup from the loss, as they head up to Virginia later today to face off against the Brunswick Academy Vikings at 6 p.m
