Bethel Christian looking to push pace all-year
The Bethel Christian varsity boy’s basketball team ran Lee Christian out of the gym in their home opener, 71-56.
The Trojans (2-1) have a smaller team and want to use that to their advantage this season by playing as fast as possible.
“A lot of teams in our conference want to slow the ball down,” junior forward Quan Hamilton said. “They got big men, but they’re slow so we think that if we pick up the pace, we can outrun them.”
Head coach Bert Potter said it’s not the system he prefers to run, but it’s the system that best fits his team.
“What we’re really focused on this year is let’s get the ball out of the rim, let’s get the ball off the rebound and let’s go and score to beat some of these zone defenses down the court, and I got the athletes to do it,” Potter said.
Potter’s team is led by guards Cody Dunk and Josh Sutton who are as fast on the basketball court as they were on the football field. Manning the paint are Hamilton and Jeremiah Washington who both stand 6’3”, are lanky and can outrun most guards.
Hamilton led the Trojans with 23, Washington and Dunk had 16, and Sutton finished with 9. Zach Boyd and Scott Sanderson finished with 3 and 4 points respectively.
The Trojans intend to run a multiple look defense that can switch sets in one possession to always keep the opposing offense on their heels. Their style of defense is looking to force turnovers and create additional possessions to create easy offense.
Potter said they missed a few defensive assignments and have some things to clean up in their half-court offense, but he’s confident they will fix it as the season goes on.
