Cyclones split with NEC Prep, Lawrence
Bolstered by the “first home run of his life” in the words of Community Christian School varsity baseball coach Andy Jackson, junior Davis Stone’s inside-the-park home run was the highlight of an 11-run first inning that sparked the Cyclones to a 19-0, four-inning victory over North East Carolina Prep on Wednesday afternoon.
CCS of the 1-A Carolina Christian Conference won for the first time in seven games, one day after dropping a 12-0, five-inning decision to Lawrence Academy.
Junior Grant Webb earned the victory against NEC Prep, pitching the distance and striking out eight. He walked two and gave up just two hits.
Stone was 2 for 3 with five RBIs, while eighth grader Thomas Lane and freshman Noah Moran each had two hits. As part of a six-run third, sophomore Avery Winstead and Moran laced back-to-back run-scoring singles. Webb added a two-run single of his own.
Versus Lawrence, the Cyclones were hurt by four errors and a pair of six-run outbursts from host Lawrence in the first and third innings. Stone took the loss on the mound, working 3 1/3 innings. Only six of his 12 runs allowed were earned as a result of the defensive miscues.
“We’re 1-6, but we’ve played Wayne Country Day, Oakwood and Lawrence and they’re the top three ranked teams in the 1-A division,” Jackson said. “I think it’s getting us better.”
Webb was 2 for 2 for CCS. Trey Styons and Jarrett Harrell each homered for Lawrence (5-2) of the 1-A Tarheel Independent Conference. Wood Troell pitched the distance for the winners, striking out seven and allowing just three CCS hits.
CCS hosts Belhaven Pungo Academy on Friday.
