Spartans very balanced in win

The Kerr-Vance Academy (2-1) boys’ basketball team played its most complete game of the season Monday evening, defeating Grace Christian of Sanford 73-45.

Grace Christian played strong throughout the first quarter, claiming an early 14-11 lead. However, from there it was basically all Spartans. Kerr-Vance outscored Grace 20-9 in the second quarter, which gave the Spartans a 31-23 lead at halftime.

“We played scrappy on defense tonight,” Spartans’ coach Taron Downey said. “Our intensity picked up in the second quarter and it went from there.”

The Spartans outscored the Crusaders 18-12 in the third quarter to increase their lead to 14 points by the start of the fourth. The Spartans’ defensive intensity zapped all of the Crusaders’ remaining energy, outscoring Grace 24-10 in the fourth quarter to earn the 73-45 victory.

Daniel Wilkerson led Kerr-Vance with 16 points, but all 12 Spartans who made the trip to Sanford converted a bucket at some point in the contest. Wil Short (11 points), Jabe Montgomery (9 points), Colby Wilkerson (9 points) and Jordan Smith (7 points) all performed well in the victory and have improved since the beginning of the season.

“I thought it was a phenomenal game by everyone on the team,” Downey said. “ I’m more happy that we are finally recognizing what defenses our opponents are playing, and we are able to adjust to them rather than settling for bad shots. And it was great that everyone scored.”

The Kerr-Vance Academy girls’ basketball squad suffered its first loss of the season at Grace of Sanford, 53-38. Junior Kennedy Adcock led the Lady Spartans with 19 points and senior Macy Lee Johnson added eight of her own. With the loss, the Lady Spartans’ record fell to 2-1 on the year.

Both varsity teams will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 1 when they travel to face 1A Carolina Independent Conference rival Faith Christian.
