BH girls keep winning, top Rocky Mount Academy
ROCKY MOUNT — As the Sallie B. Howard High School girls basketball team slowly surfaces toward a .500 record in its first season at the varsity level, it’s quite clear the Eagles are buying into what head coach Debra Pegram is selling — defense.
Pegram, who spent more than 30 years at Beddingfield and won 442 games in 28 seasons as head coach, staked her success on her teams’ ability to defend. The 2021-22 Eagles are following in line as they rallied from a halftime deficit to win 45-43 Monday at Rocky Mount Academy.
“We had a really good third quarter defensively. Put a little more pressure on them,” said Pegram, whose team climbed to 4-5 after an 0-3 start.
The Eagles held Rocky Mount Academy (5-3) to just five points in the third quarter to seize control and a defensive stop thwarted RMA’s hopes of tying the game in the final seconds.
Sallie B. Howard broke a tie with less than a minute to play when junior Destiny Ainstead fed sophomore Keyonna Thompson for a layup on a inbound play under the Eagles basket.
The Eagles then forced a turnover and dribbled out the clock, Pegram said.
Thompson finished with 21 points and nine rebounds while Ainstead supplied 20 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Sophomore Zaria Lewis had four points and five rebounds while Kaitlyn Redmond and Makayla Opie each came up with three steals.
Senior Mary Hanna Bryant’s 15 points led RMA.
Sallie B. Howard’s scheduled game at Riverside Christian Academy in Fayetteville on Tuesday was canceled so the Eagles will visit North Carolina Good, Better, Best Academy in Durham on Thursday.
