WILLIAMS, HP CHRISTIAN GIRLS BASKETBALL

GRAHAM — Burlington Williams’ girls rallied to defeat High Point Christian 59-54 on Monday at Southern Alamance.

MT. HERMON — Williams High School coach Andrea Stinson had seen enough from her girls’ basketball team to warrant a timeout.

It came after the Bulldogs gave up a 7-0 run to High Point Christian in the first two minutes of the third quarter, putting Williams in an 11-point hole.

“Show me you want to play,” she told her team as she subbed four of her five her players.

They did, fighting back and picking up a 59-54 non-conference victory in the Tony Perrou Classic on Monday afternoon at Southern Alamance.

“You’ve got to want to play,” Stinson said. “I can’t come out there and play for you.”

The Bulldogs (11-3) closed the third quarter on a 13-4 run, including a stretch of 11 consecutive points, with suffocating defense that forced High Point Christian into a plethora of turnoversa

“We’ve been talking about that defense,” Stinson said. “That’s what we’re about. If we just get that in our head that we’ve got to play the defense and turn the ball over and moving and get them doing stuff they’re not comfortable with.”

Makayla Crawley made three 3-pointers and scored 12 points while Talaya Smith and Tia Tucker added 10 apiece to pace the Williams offense.

“I just wanted to make them feel us on the defensive end,” Stinson said. “They weren’t feeling us at first. They were comfortable so we wanted to make them uncomfortable.”

Smith’s made field goal on a putback gave Williams its first lead of the second half at 42-41 with 6:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Taela Whitehead’s 3-pointer, coming after a steal by Smith, put the Bulldogs in front 56-49 with two minutes left.

Kennedy Powell finished with 22 points and Patricia Walz supplied 12 points for the Cougars (11-5), who led 29-25 at halftime and 36-25 i
