No. 5 Knights suffer first home loss 6-1


Junior midfielder Logan Johnson gave the Greenfield School varsity boys soccer team an early lead Tuesday night against North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A power Fayetteville Academy, but the Knights couldn’t sustain it as the Eagles erupted for six unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 loss on Forbes Field.


Greenfield (4-3-2) of the 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference took a lead in the 11th minute on Johnson’s goal off a cross from junior forward James Wells. But roughly three minutes later, Fayetteville Academy had tied it. The Eagles took the lead for good in the 16th minute and held a 4-1 lead at the half. Fayetteville Academy, ranked No. 3 among 2-A schools by North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association, won its fifth game without a loss. The 2-A Coastal Rivers Conference Eagles posted a 20-1 record last season.


Greenfield entered play slotted No. 5 in 1-A by NCSCA voters.


Fayetteville owned a 58-42 possession advantage and outshot Greenfield 20-2. Knights keepers combined for 14 saves, with junior Cedrick Kirby starting and logging 66 minutes of play. Senior Harrison Currin played the remaining 14 minutes.
