Edmondson’s outburst not enough for WCA
LEXINGTON — Junior Jennifer Edmondson slugged a pair of home runs in the second game of a scheduled doubleheader Friday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough for the Wilson Christian softball team to salvage a game as host Union Grove claimed both ends of the twinbill by 14-6 and 12-8 counts.
WCA (2-6, 0-2) of the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A ranks pulled to within 6-5 after three innings in the second game. But the Patriots (5-4) erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth to take control in the shortened five-inning contest. The first game was scheduled for the regulation seven innings.
WCA outhit Union Grove by a 10-9 margin in the second game as Edmondson drove in three runs.
Holland Miller, a sophomore, belted a solo homer and doubled in addition to stealing two bases.
Sixth grader Katie McBryde drove in a pair of runs.
Alivia Hurteau took the loss for WCA in the second game, yielding all nine hits. Seven of her 12 runs allowed were earned, while the seventh grader struck out six and walked six.
Faith Hauser claimed the win in both contests for Union Grove, striking out seven in the second game and fanning six over five innings during the opener.
WCA was plagued by seven errors in the first game as it squandered a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third with five Union Grove runs. The hosts tackled on four more in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Miller drove in two runs during the first game, while Hurteau and Edmondson doubled.
Hauser aided her cause with a home run and drove in four runs.
WCA returns home to face Cary Academy on Tuesday.
