Wilson Christian nips Knights, 3-2

Senior Brad Batten’s sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the seventh settled the Wilson Christian Academy varsity baseball team’s tense 3-2 victory against city rival Greenfield School on Monday night on the Turnage Athletic Complex diamond.

The second victory this season against the Knights boosted Wilson Christian’s record to 7-7-1. The Chargers welcome Greenville Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

With the score knotted 2-2, Wilson Christian’s Carlos Molina led off the bottom of the seventh by beating out an infield hit and darting to second on a throwing error on the play. Junior Austin Holland sacrifice-bunted Molina to third.

Greenfield head coach Daniel Johnson instructed senior right-handed pitcher Jake Taylor to load the bases with a pair of intentional walks. But on an one-strike pitch, Batten lifted a fly ball deep enough to center field to score Molina with the walk-off, game-winning run.

The sacrifice fly settled a pitching duel between junior left-hander Will Whitley of the Chargers and Greenfield’s Jake Taylor. Whitley yielded four hits and two walks while striking out five. Taylor gave up six hits and three walks (two intentional) while striking out six.

Wilson Christian struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. Junior Kevin Teague led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base by senior Jared Burrell. A walk to Batten and Whitley’s single loaded the bases and set the stage for junior Jonathan Denton’s sacrifice fly.

The Knights drew even in the third. Jake Taylor doubled; Luke Taylor singled and Jake Taylor scored on a fielder’s choice from Hunter Stokely.

Greenfield grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Cedric Kirby singled and stayed on the base paths when the Chargers muffed a pick-off opportunity. Kirby scored on Luke Taylor’s two-out single.

The Chargers then forged a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Batten again came through with a sacrifice fly.

“Great game tonight by both teams,” commented WCA head coach Ty Bissett. “Will pitched a heck of a game and hats off to Jake, too.”
