The debut in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A Coastal Plains Independents Conference brought a double dose of disappointment for the host Community Christian School varsity boys basketball team Monday night.
The Cyclones were not only defeated in their debut 62-39 by Wayne Country Day but they were toppled from the ranks of the unbeaten after six wins.
Wayne Country Day, coached by former CCS head coach David Flowers, was also tipping off conference play and upped its overall record to 3-5.
CCS joined the CPIC this season after playing in the 1-A Carolina Christian Conference for several years.
The Chargers were unable to solve the Cyclones’ defense the first half, but managed to surge from an 8-7 deficit after one quarter to a 14-12 halftime edge.
However, the second half was a different story. The Chargers ramped up the intensity and tempo. CCS couldn’t keep pace and was outscored 29-10 in the third quarter.
“We played great the first half,” reviewed first-year CCS head coach Micah Baines. “We knew they were going to come out looking to attack in the second half. We didn’t play our game; we didn’t slow it down enough. We didn’t match their intensity the second half.”
The Chargers shut down junior Rieshod Baines, the CCS leading scorer, after a feverish, tiring first half. Junior point guard Dominique Evans paced the Cyclones with 14 points and Cameron Williams netted eight. Baines wound up with six points.
Wayne Country Day got 18 points from Jamal King, 16 from Cole Atwood and 11 from Jimmy Sanders.
The Cyclones, coming off a 62-45 win at Grace Christian of Sanford, break from conference play to welcome Lee Christian in the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf gym Friday night.
WAYNE COUNTRY DAY (62)
Atwood 16, Turnage 3, Sanders 11, Hill 3, Cooper 2, Kermode 5, Baker 2, King 18, Strickland 2.
COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN (39)
Evans 14, Haney 4, Stone 5, Baines 6, Williams 8, Bridgers 2.
Score by quarters:
WCD 7 7 29 19 — 62
CCS 8 4 10 17 — 39
