CARY | Two down, one to go.
Arendell Parrott is almost done with a three-game, eight-day stretch of football after throttling Cary Christian 62-24 on Monday. The Patriots (8-1), coming off a 44-0 home win against Halifax Academy Friday, will play its Senior Night game Friday against Southampton Academy.
Arendell Parrott coach Matt Beaman said while the stretch may have been seen as rough, the two easy wins have helped.
“The best thing is that we haven’t really taken a beating or dealt with injuries,” Beaman said. “Everyone will be healthy against Southampton and ready to go. Three games in eight days sounds like a lot, but we’ll only have one true test, which is Friday.”
Davis Basden ensured the Patriots would have an easy time with Cary Christian (2-7). Basden had 288 yards offensively — including 246 on the ground — and five touchdowns, including the game’s initial score on a 61-yard run 41 seconds into the contest.
After the Knights were forced to punt, Basden scored gains from 40-yards out, giving the Patriots a 14-0 advantage with barely two minutes elapsed.
Cary Christian struck back on its next drive, with the Knights ending a 6-play, 50-yard march with an 18-yard touchdown from Ethan Peters to Joel Green to cut the deficit to six. Two plays later, Basden scored his third touchdown on a 68-yard run.
Basden had six carries in the first quarter for 204 yards.
“I was just doing what the coach told me to,” Basden said. ‘The linemen blocked for me and I just hit the holes.”
The Knights tried to counter again, but Matthew Chappell intercepted a Peters pass to kill their ensuing drive. Five plays later, Connor Bright connected with Charlie King for a three-yard TD for the 30-8 Arendell Parrott advantage. On Cary Christian’s next drive, Cole Daniels intercepted Peters and took it 72 yards for a score and signified the rout was on.
Basden scored on a 42-yard run on the second play of the second quarter and on a 42-yard touchdown pass from King with 5:13 in the first half for the 50-8 advantage and the running clock. Beaman took out his starters after that point to preserve their health for the season finale.
Arendell Parrott forced five turnovers in the game and held Cary Christian to 242 yards offensively, including just 30 on the ground. For Cary Christian, Peters went 10 of 22 for 212 yards with three touchdowns.
