For the first time in program history, the Berean Baptist Academy boys’ basketball team can call itself a state champion.

The Bulldogs won the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A state championship on Feb. 20 with a 93-70 victory against Liberty Christian at Alamance Christian School in Graham.

Joshua Thompson-Parker scored a team-high 24 points to lead four players in double figures. Kelton Battle, Nehemiah McClain and John Butler each added 17 points for Berean Baptist, which won its final 10 games of the season to finish with a 19-10 record.

Leading by 20 at halftime, the Bulldogs saw their advantage trimmed to nine toward the end of the third quarter before 26 points in the final period put the game on ice.

In addition to the varsity team’s historic victory, Berean Baptist’s JV program also claimed its first state title with a 65-57 win against Wilson Christian on Feb. 19.

Kenny Vera scored 22 points with eight rebounds and seven assists to pace the Bulldogs. Abrahm Jarriel logged a double-double with 14 points and 15 boards, and Chase Evans had 15 points to go with six rebounds.

Berean Baptist’s JV team finished with an 18-3 record.
