NCISAA comes down hard on Asheville School football

The N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association has informed its membership that Asheville School will be fined a total of $750 and barred from the 2016 state football playoffs for forfeiting a postseason matchup against Christ School on Nov. 6.

NCISAA executive director Homar Ramirez said in an internal memo to schools that his association would abide by punishment for postseason forfeits in its handbook (a $500 fine and one-year playoff ban). In addition the Blues were penalized $250 for "conduct prejudicial to the best interests of the NCISAA."

Asheville School lost its final regular-season game to visiting Christ School on Halloween, 48-20.

Brackets for the NCISAA Division II playoffs were announced a day later. The Blues said they would not travel as a Nov. 7 seed to second-seeded Christ School (10-2) due to a lack of depth. Asheville School coach Gus Schill said he had 27 players available for the potential second meeting between the two oldest rivals in either North Carolina or South Carolina high school football.

Asheville School and Christ School have met in football 90 times since 1911. After the first-ever forfeit, the Blues lead the all-time series, 50-37-4, but have now lost six straight games.

In his memo, Ramirez went on to state that "As a result of the ruling, Asheville School representatives and the NCISAA have had a number of interactions. It is important to note that Asheville School has responded professionally and appropriately in those communications."
