The #2 seeded Greenies from Christ School traveled to High Point to take on the #1 seeded Cougars of High Point Christian Academy tonight.
Christ School had defeated #3 Ravenscroft last week, avenging their loss in last year's NCISAA Division 2 title game. High Point Christian was coming off a win over Cannon school and was looking to add to last year's NCISAA Division 3 Championship win. The Greenies from Christ School were looking for their first state title in football.
HPCA scored on the opening drive of the game, starting at their own 34-yard line and finishing with a 1-yard TD pass from De'Shaun Taylor to Tyeren Melton. The snap on the PAT was low, so the score stood at 6-0 at the 8:52 mark of the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Jaydan Van Eaton caused a fumble on the return which was recovered by HPCA's Copeland Petitfils and set the Cougars up with a short field on the Greenies 23-yard line. The Christ School stood firm and got a big sack to force the Cougars to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Austin Hendley. The Cougars now led 9-0 with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter. Christ School answered on the ensuing drive as Drew Johnson found Kokayi Cobb out of the backfield who outran the defense for a 46-yard catch and run. The PAT failed, but the Greenies had cut the lead to 9-6 with 2:54 on the clock. The rest of the half was a defensive battle as both teams were forced to punt multiple times. The Cougars appeared to have another touchdown late in the second quarter, but it was negated by a holding penalty. The drive continued as the Cougars advanced the ball to the 6-yard line toward the end of the second quarter but were unable to punch the ball into the end zone from the 1 on 3 separate tries, and Christ School took over on downs. Johnson barely escaped a tackle in the end zone that would have led to a safety and Christ School's drive ended as the half expired.
The third quarter was more of the same as both defenses forced multiple punts and the game remained close. On HPCA's second drive of the half, they were able to advance the ball deep into Christ School territory and it looked like they might have another TD on a diving catch by Melton, but the pass was ruled incomplete as the Cougars had to settle for a 37-yard FG attempt. The kick was wide right, and the Greenies took over possession of the ball. Two more Christ School and 1 more HPCA punt took us into the fourth quarter. On HPCA's first drive of the fourth quarter, Lance Boykin found some room on the right side of the formation and outran the defense for a 52-yard TD. The PAT by Hendley increased the Cougar lead to 16-6 with 10:57 remaining in the game. On the ensuing kickoff it appeared that Christ School scored on a long return but it was called back for a block in the back. Christ School had to go for a 4th and 7 conversion but the Cougar defense stopped them, and HPCA took over on downs on their own 45-yard line. The Cougars faced their own 4th and 1 and were able to convert it on a short pass from Taylor to Melton. The Cougars then faced a 4th and 11 with 5:42 left in the game and chose to go for the first down but came up a yard short on the play. Christ School regained possession of the ball, down 10 with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game. A couple penalties on the Cougars and some good plays by the Greenies helped them advance the ball past midfield. However, Boykin picked off a Johnson pass shortly thereafter at the 23-yard line and returned it to the 36. The Cougars were slowly working down the clock and faced a 4th and 5 situation with 56.9 seconds left in the game. Boykin took the handoff and headed left but couldn't find any room. He reversed field and found some room back on the right side for a 9-yard gain that gave the Cougars the first down and sealed the win.
It was a competitive game between two very good teams. Christ School finishes their season at 10-2. High Point Christian finishes at 10-1 and takes home their 2nd state title and their first title in Division 2 football. Congratulations to both teams on outstanding seasons.
