Cary Academy, Charlotte Latin among N.C. Independent Schools state swimming champions

The Cary Academy girls and Charlotte Latin boys led a group of repeat champions this week in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s state swimming and diving championships.
Cary Academy repeated as the Division 1 girls’ team champion, and Charlotte Latin accomplished the same feat in the boys’ meet.
The Cary Academy boys took second place, while Charlotte Country Day was second in the girls’ competition.
The Division 2 championship also featured repeat team champions, with the Forsyth Country Day girls and Asheville School boys finishing first.
University Christian of Hickory repeated as Division 3 girls’ team champion, while Caldwell Academy of Greensboro edged Wayne Country Day for the boys’ title. Epiphany School of Global Studies in New Bern was the defending 1A boys’ champion.
In the Division 1 boys’ meet, Charlotte Latin senior Andy Dorsel shattered an 18-year-old record by winning the 200-yard medley relay in a time of one minute 50.01 seconds. The old record, of 1:51.17, was set in 2003 by Matt McGinnis of Ravenscroft School.
The competition took place Monday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
