On May 12, Charlotte Country Day announced the hiring of Myers Park High School assistant coach Drew Witman as its next head football coach and football program head. The decision to hire Drew came after an exhaustive national search that began in late February. Drew will succeed his father, Bob Witman, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
“I’m very pleased with our search process and even more pleased with the result,” said Country Day Director of Athletics, Abe Wehmiller. “Our community was thoroughly invested in this search and that showed in the high quality of candidates we were able to bring to the table.
“In the end, Drew emerged as our pick because of his combination of passion for coaching and passion for our program at Country Day. He’s a rising star in the coaching ranks, and I’m looking forward to the prospect of working with him for many years to come.”
Drew joined the staff at Myers Park this past season and was responsible for coaching linebackers and coordinating the defense under first-year head coach Scott Chadwick. The Mustangs racked up a 5–7 record in the regular season before falling to eventual state champion Mallard Creek in the first round of the NCHSAA 4-AA playoffs.
Prior to his stint at Myers Park, Drew served on the staff at Country Day for three years, coaching quarterbacks and cornerbacks, and also spent time coaching in the Buccaneers baseball program. A 2006 graduate of Country Day, Drew was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball) and won a state football championship with the Bucs in his junior year. He went on to become a three-year starter at quarterback for William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the tradition of excellence here at Country Day,” Drew said. “I’m excited to be a part of a school that excels both in the classroom and on the playing field.
“Myers Park is an amazing place with even better students and staff, and I want to personally thank the administration and head coach Scott Chadwick for allowing me to join their team this past year. But Charlotte Country Day is a special place for me, and I am glad to be back.”
Drew will begin his work at Country Day this summer after closing out the school year at Myers Park. The Buccaneers and Mustangs will open the 2015 season against each other on August 22 in the third annual CharlottePreps.tv Kickoff Night. Game time is 5 pm at a location to be determined.
