Jon Mitchell’s decision to move North Raleigh Christian Academy’s Sidney Shepheard to cleanup is paying off nicely.
The senior catcher batted in the No. 3 hole last year before her coach realized the potential of her power at the plate.
Shepheard drove in four runs in the Knights’ 22-6 victory over St. Mary’s School on Friday at Jaycee Park. She finished 4-for-5 with two inside-the-fence home runs. With her production, Shepheard set a school record for most homers with 11.
Her pair was two of six home runs North Raleigh Christian hit against St. Mary’s, as the park’s fence stretched a bit longer than high school regulations.
heard hit her first two-run homer in the top of the second, aiding in a run to break up a 1-1 tie. The Knights scored eight runs that frame off four hits and two errors to separate from the Saints.
After three straight walks in the second, Knights leadoff Machaela Twisss (2-for-4, two HR) buried her own home run deep to center field. Shepheard followed up to score Cassidy Young.
St. Mary’s got its first hit in the bottom of the fourth, where it erupted for four runs. Starter Tally Morton collected an RBI single.
Morton went 2-for-3 with two runs. She pitched the complete game and assisted on three outs. She caught two.
Knights starter Brianna Shobert pitched two hitless innings and stuck out five batters.

Sidney Shepheard, North Raleigh Christian: She was the true definition of a cleanup hitter. She flew out to left in her first at-bat, but drove in at least one runner on the next three. She singled on the last one to move runners into scoring position.
Cassidy Young, North Raleigh Christian: She hardly let anyone get to her first base. She was on the tail end of four outs, including three fielded from third base. She also picked up an RBI single at the plate.
Tally Morton, St. Mary’s: She threw 116 pitches but still had the strength to help with outs and at the plate. She struck out a batter and led the Saints at the plate.
