Top-seed North Raleigh Christian sweeps Durham Academy for 5th straight title

By Kyle Morton, HighSchoolOT producer

Raleigh, N.C. — The North Raleigh Christian Academy Knights won their fifth consecutive volleyball state championship on Saturday afternoon, downing the Durham Academy Cavaliers in straight sets.

The two teams also met twice during the regular season, with the Knights winning once 3-1 and the other time in straight sets.

The Knights assumed full control of the match right from the very beginning, jumping out to a 8-0 lead in the first set on a big run with Taylor Thomason serving.

That lead hit double digits at 18-8, and the Knights carried that edge to a 25-15 win in the first set.

The momentum from that set carried over to the second set as NRCA quickly jumped out to another sizable lead at 6-1.

Like the lead in the first set, it was there to stay. The Cavaliers didn't let the lead hit double digits in the second, but the Knights' lead was never threatened.

NRCA took the second set 25-16 to put Durham Academy on the brink.

The Cavaliers were able to take the first two points of the third set, but the Knights immediately went on a quick run to tie the score.

Durham Academy continued to fight as the Cavs took an 8-6 lead looking to keep their season alive.

But NRCA made the third set like the first two and took it 25-19 to win the title,

The win puts NRCA's record on the season at 31-4.

With the loss, Durham Academy fell to 17-8 on the year.
