Former East Mecklenburg High and J.C. Smith guard Wayne Hinton has been hired to coach girls basketball at Northside Christian.

Hinton, who played at East Meck from 1996-99, replaces Ashley McGuirt, who took a similar job at Carmel Christian, a southeast Charlotte private school.

Hinton was part of J.C. Smith teams that won a CIAA championship, a South Atlantic Regional championship and made an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite 8. In the 2002-03 season, Hinton led the NCAA Division II in assists.

Hinton has also been a coach and trainer with girls basketball for 12 years and has worked with several of the area’s top players of recent years, including former Observer players of the year Cierra Burdick (Butler, Tennessee, WNBA’s Atlanta Dream) and Tiffany Mitchell (Providence Day, South Carolina, WNBA’s Indiana Fever).

Hinton was also a middle school and head varsity coach at Westminster Catawba in Rock Hill, and an assistant at Rock Hill South Pointe under former Observer coach of the year Stephanie Butler (when Butler was coaching at Butler High).
