Northwood Temple boys, girls reach NCISAA 1-A basketball semifinals
Alas, there was a problem.
Freshman Travon Jackson ran into foul trouble midway through the second quarter and remained in deep trouble throughout the remainder of the game. Taking that one piece off the board was all the visiting Falcons needed to gain the upper hand.
With Jackson on the bench, UFC muscled back into the game behind the trio of Rafael Jenkins, Jalen Knight and KC Hankton. When Jenkins stripped Jeremiah Morris and raced for an easy layup, the Falcons seized the lead at 60-59 with 5:26 to play.
“We challenged them to fight back and they did,” Falcons coach Josh Coley said. “We settled in.”
Eagles coach Corey Baker sent Jackson back to the floor with four fouls and he triggered a 10-0 run that put the Eagles back in front to stay. During that stretch, Michael Hueitt Jr. coaxed two offensive fouls out of UFC while Morris took a charge, disrupting the Falcons’ second-half momentum.
“That’s the intensity he brings,” Baker said. “The scary part is he’s just a ninth-grader. The intensity and everything that he brings? He’s one of the motors that makes us go. He brings so much energy that it allows us to do a lot of things.”
Jackson led five Eagles in double figures with 18 points. Morris added 17. AuDiese Toney had 14 while Hueitt scored 11 and Manny Bates had 10. Jenkins led United Faith (25-5) with 20 points.
