Indian Land High School has hired another coach with ties to Providence Day School.
Thursday, athletic director Vernon Hunter told the Observer the school had hired Providence Day assistant David Johnson as its new head girls basketball coach. Back in February, Indian Land hired former Chargers football coach Adam Hastings.
Johnson, 40, will move into his first head coaching job since the 2010-11 season ended, when he coached at Norfolk (Va.) Christian School.
In two seasons at Norfolk Christian, Johnson’s teams were 43-12. Johnson moved to Charlotte after leaving Norfolk Christian, eventually landing a job at Providence Day as an assistant to head coach Josh Springer.
From 2012-20, Johnson was part of a team that won seven state championships. The Chargers’ most recent title came last February, when Providence Day upset top-seeded Greensboro Day to win the school’s 17th state title.
Johnson was a high school basketball player at Maury (Va.) and later played at Hampton. A 6-foot-7 forward, he played six seasons of professional basketball in Europe and Mexico.
He said he can’t wait to get started at his new school. Indian Land is in Lancaster County just past the N.C. state line near Ballantyne.
