Bengals lack energy but recover, win

Greensboro Day 65

Forsyth Country Day 49

GREENSBORO _ Greensboro Day did not play its “A” game Tuesday night, but the Bengals showedwhy they’re the area’s best boys basketball team as they still came away with a 65-49 victory over Forsyth Country Day.

The Bengals (24-3, 4-0 PACIS) were sluggish early, falling behind 10-0 against a Forsyth Country Day team that has also challenged conference rivals High Point Christian and Wesleyan. Coach Freddy Johnson called a timeout after just two minutes amd 57 seconds to regroup.

“Forsyth came out ready to play and we did not,” Johnson said. “They have a good team and they really stuck it to us with that 10-0 run. After the timeout, we did much better, but I still don’t think we did a very good job with clock management, score management. To win championships you have to do those two things.”

Winning championships is the standard for the 2015 NCISAA Class 3-A champions. The Bengalshave won the HAECO Invitational and have beaten their toughest conferencerivals — Forsyth Country Day, High Point Christian and Wesleyan. But the energy just wasn’t there earlyTuesday night.

“In a home game you don’t really expect to haveto bring your own energy as a team,” said junior forward Jaquar “J.P.” Moorman, who led Greensboro Day with 20 points. “We didn’t get the support until later in the game, but a lot of that had to do with the weather and some students not being able to get here.

We’ll make sure we’re ready next game.” Johnson said of Moorman: “He got back in the game later, but he wasn’t consistent. For us to be good, he has to be consistent.”

Greensboro Day used an 8-0 run in the fi nal 1:37 of the first quarter to gain a 17-15 advantage. The Bengals were up 31-23 at the half and steadily pulled away once they picked uptheir defensive intensity.

“They play at a much faster tempo than we do,” Furies coach Howard West said. “We were playing on adrenaline for the first three minutes. We tried to sub to make sure we could catch them before they got too far gone, and I knew if we didn’t get back on defense they were going to put a run on us and they sure did.”

Sophomore wing John Newman, Greensboro Day’s most consistent player, added 13 points. Newman’s ability to get out in transition fueled most of the Bengals’ runs.

Up next for Greensboro Day is a home game Friday night against No. 3 High Point Christian.
