APA boys squeak past FCA, girls drop first game of the season
Arendell Parrott’s Mir Mir Moore scored a game-high 20 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, to help the Patriots defeat Fayetteville Christian Thursday.
Arendell Parrott's offense started clicking in the second half, but a huge defensive play clinched the game.
The Patriots defeated Fayetteville Christian 58-57 in a wild one Thursday. Mir Mir Moore scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter and Jonah Beaman drew a last-second charge to seal the win. APA (4-8) scored just 14 points in the first half, but stayed within striking distance until the offense heated up.
"I thought we played OK in the first half," Patriots coach Glen Taylor said. "It was horseshoes and hand grenades; close, but not quite there. We've made a couple of changes on offense and simplified things, and we put the ball in Mir Mir's hands. The guys played off him and he had the game of his life."
Nick Harrison started the game with a basket for the Patriots, but the Warriors (4-5) countered with a 12-3 spurt to take control. APA wouldn’t get within five in the first half as Fayetteville Christian took a 23-14 lead at the break, and Daunte Gardner’s basket to start the third pushed the advantage back up to double figures.
Arendell Parrott responded with consecutive 3-pointers from Nick Harrison and Will Whitley on the way to a 28-point third-quarter explosion to retake the lead. When Moore started the fourth with a 3-pointer, the Patriots led 45-38.
The Patriots led 55-48 after Moore’s basket with 4:46 to play, but it would be the team’s last field goal as the Warriors fought back. Gardner’s basket inside with 1:25 remaining tied the game at 55, but Moore hit a pair of free throws on the next possession. Jaden Scriven scored inside to tie it again at 57 with 29 seconds to play, and Moore was fouled again on the next possession — this time with 7.2 seconds left.
Moore calmly sank the first free throw to put the Patriots back up.
“I felt confident up there and knew we could pull it out,” Moore said. “In the second half, we were able to take control and my dad always told me when you control the pace of the game good things will happen.”
Moore missed the second free throw and Fayetteville Christian rushed to the basket, putting the ball in the hands of Scriven. Beaman stepped up to draw a charge with .5 seconds to play, sealing the win.
"I knew he was going to drive hard to the basket, so I just went to stop him," Beaman said. "He had been doing that all game and if I stopped him, it would be over."
