Providence Day grabs wins on opening day of Hoops Challenge
By Tim Donelli
The Providence Day Chargers girls’ and boys’ basketball teams claimed big wins Friday in the opening day of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Myers Park High School.
The girls’ first-day matchup featured the 6-time 3A private-school champion Chargers meeting the 2015 NCISAA 2A state runner-up Northside Lady Knights. Providence Day got 21 points from Janelle Bailey, 20 from Erin Whalen and 15 from Kennedy Boyd for a 60-41 victory over Northside.
The Providence Day boys defeated Word of God (Raleigh), ranked No. 20 by USA Today, 84-66. Senior Grant Williams poured in 24 points while sophomore Devon Dotson added 23 for the Chargers. Providence Day is ranked No. 1 in the Observer’s Sweet 16.
The girls’ game featured a matchup between two of the state’s premier inside players in Bailey and Eleah Parker for the Knights. The matchup didn’t reach the level many had hoped as Parker (11 points) got in early foul trouble.
Parker had three fouls at the half and picked up her fourth early in the third quarter. She eventually fouled out with 4 minutes left in the game. Shamani Stafford tied Parker as Northside’s leading scorer with 11 points.
Chargers’ coach Josh Springer chose to talk about the team play of both schools rather than focusing in on the individual matchup between Bailey and Parker. “I thought they both played well,” said Springer. “Obviously a lot of people like to say this great post player against this great post player, but it was Northside Christian against Providence Day. We didn’t finish around the rim as well as we would have liked to, but our free-throw shooting made up for that.”
WORTH MENTIONING: The Providence Day girls went an amazing 96 percent from the free-throw line sinking 25 of 26 opportunities.
QUOTE: “Eleah Parker is a great player. She’s talked about around the city and talked about around the nation. She doesn’t get her ranking for no reason. Unfortunately she fouled out but throughout the game she is steady, she keeps her composure and it was a great matchup.” Chargers’ Janelle Bailey talking about Northside’s Eleah Parker
RECORDS: Northside Christian girls (2-1), Providence Day girls (3-0). Providence Day boys (3-2).
WHAT’S NEXT: The Providence Day girls will take on Ardrey Kell Saturday at noon in gym 2, while Northside will tangle with Hopewell at 2 p.m. in gym 1. The Providence Day boys will meet High Point Christian (ranked No. 12 nationally) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in gym 2.
