Providence Day sweeps 4A boys cross country titles, Charlotte Latin wins girls team championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Providence Day's boys and Charlotte Latin's girls claimed N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A cross country state championships on Saturday in Charlotte.
Providence Day finished the day with a team score of 51, placing three runners in the top six, including the individual champion, senior Christian Landis who finished the course in 15:26.0.
Colter Nichols finished fourth for Providence Day. The senior finished in 16:16.9. Meanwhile, senior John Alfred Smith placed sixth with a time of 16:21.5.
Cary Academy placed second in the team standings with a score of 70, followed by Covenant Day, who won a tie-breaker for third place with Durham Academy as both teams scored an 84. Charlotte Country Day placed fifth with a score of 155.
Kenny Eheman, a senior at Cary Academy, finished second in the boys' individual race with a time of 15:34.5, about eight seconds behind the state champion. Durham Academy senior Jay Shanahan finished third with a time of 15:58.9. Nichols (16:16.9) and Dawson Reeves of Christ School (16:19.1) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Charlotte Latin's girls team narrowly edged Charlotte Country Day and Providence Day for the 4A team championship. Charlotte Latin finished with a team score of 66, followed by Charlotte Country Day's score of 70, and Providence Day's third place score of 79. The three schools ran away with most of the top individual finishes too.
Mary Schleusner, a junior, led Charlotte Latin with her fourth place finish in a time of 19:14.1. She was the only Charlotte Latin runner in the top ten, but freshman Melissa Coffey (20:01.2), junior Madeleine Pease (20:08.6), and sophomore Mary Cate Kiser (20:11.6) placed 13th, 14th, and 16th respectively.
Kasey Cone was the individual champion on the girls side. The freshman from Charlotte Country Day finished with a time of 18:46.1, the only runner to finish in less than 19 minutes.
The top three finishers in the girls race were all freshmen. Durham Academy's Allison Hall finished second with a time of 19:00.9, and Providence Day's Carly Arrington was third with a time of 19:12.3.
Following Schleusner's fourth place finish was Charlotte Country Day junior Harper Shaw with a time of 19:18.9, rounding out the top five.
