The Rocky Mount Academy girls’ tennis team finished its season with a win — an important win.
The Eagles won the NCISAA 2-A state championship on Saturday by defeating Trinity Academy, 6-2. The Eagles earned a 1-A title in 2000, and Saturday’s victory gave the program its first 2-A state title in girls tennis.
RMA (17-1) opened the match with two doubles victory. The top pairing of Haven Ross and Ann Sumner Thorp won, 8-4, while the No. 3 pairing of Lillie Daughtridge and Shelton Honey earned a 9-7 win.
Ross went on to win at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Other singles winner for RMA included Caroline Gay at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3, Ada Everette at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2, and Honey at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2.
Daughtridge lost at No. 6, 6-1, 7-5, and Sumner Thorp’s match wasn’t finished by the time the Eagles secured the match-winning point.
Ross and Sumner Thorp received All-State player awards.
The Eagles enjoyed a dominant season that involved only one loss, a 5-4 decision back on Aug. 29 to St. Mary’s. Since then, the Eagles won each match by at least a 6-3 margin the rest of the way.
