Rocky Mount Academy’s Shelton Honey has collected a number of awards as part of various Eagles athletics programs. The senior is also an active member of the community off the court, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed as she will be recognized for her success by the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers on Friday announced that Honey would be the recipient of the 2021 Carolina Panthers Community Captain award. The award recognizes leadership in ten high school students in North and South Carolina. The program recognizes these high school student-athletes who excel in their sport, in the classroom, and in their community. Honey was nominated this fall.
Male candidates are required to be high school football players, while female candidates are required to have participated in a varsity sport. Honey is the top singles play on the girls’ tennis team, and was named team MVP last season along with earning an all-state selection. She owns an 8-4 singles record this year for the 13-4 Eagles.
Honey is also a starter on the girls’ soccer team. Honey will be recognized during a special in-game ceremony during Carolina’s Week 9 home game against the New England Patriots on Nov. 7. The winners will each earn a $500 grant to benefit their high school athletic departments.
