Wesleyan soccer cruises past Carlisle

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian quickly raced away and continued to add momentum into its stretch run.

The Trojans scored six goals in the first 13 minutes of the match, worked in reserves the rest of the way and rolled past Carlisle 9-0 in girls soccer Tuesday on Senior Day at Wesleyan’s Sanford Field.

“We played well,” Wesleyan coach Sarah Denton said. “We were excited to get everybody in too. So that was really nice. It’s good for everyone to practice all the tactics we’ve been going over. So it was good.

“One of our goals is to always score within the first 10 minutes, regardless of what team we play. So that was nice. That’s great that they can go with that and keep that commitment.”

Kayla Burrough scored three goals and dished one assist while Sydney Peele also scored two goals to lead the Trojans (9-1), who are ranked No. 21 in the state overall and No. 5 among NCISAA 4A teams by MaxPreps.

Chapel Byrd, Grace Thurman, Ella Heywood and Emma Flippen each added a goal, while Eliza Stallings and Caroline Heywood had two assists apiece, and Ella Heywood, Ava Nicholson and Yancy Veach each had an assist.

“It was very nice, because we have another game this week that will be very tough,” said Burroughs, a senior forward who has signed with UNC Wilmington. “So it allowed us to get everyone some playing time, everyone to work on the ball and work on their individual play.”

Wesleyan, which has won five in a row since losing April 9 at Charlotte Christian, quickly took control in the opening minutes. Burroughs took the ball up the left side, dribbled through the defense and scored in the third minute.

Ella Heywood extended the lead in the seventh minute on a ball behind the defense, and Burroughs scored again in the eighth minute after making a run. She scored again in the 10th minute — winning the ball, stepping and scoring.

Peele found the net in the 12th minute, taking a centering pass and scoring, and again in the 13th minute — controlling the ball in the middle, stepping and scoring. Byrd finished in front in the 34th minute to make it 7-0 into halftime.

“I think we always come out very strong,” Burroughs said. “We mentally prepare for the game ahead throughout the entire week. So just the mentality of wanting to win really helps us to go out strong on every team and put the first goal in.”

The Trojans — featuring seniors Burroughs, Hannah Fowler, Peele, Ella Heywood, Rachel Poplin and Kloe Totel — shifted around positions and rotated in reserves for much of the match after the initial flurry.

With several of its notable players set to graduate at the end of this year, Wesleyan has used opportunities like Tuesday’s match to gain experience and confidence among its younger, less-experienced players.

“You can coach them while they’re in, and the older girls and girls who play can coach them as well,” Denton said. “And it also allows us to preserve ourselves a little bit for Thursday, which will be a very difficult game for us.

“So it’s nice not to kill our legs — and it’s good for these girls too. The girls who don’t play much always have the girls’ backs who do. So it’s nice to have it flipped a little bit.”

Flippen added a goal in the 49th minute following a corner kick, and Thurman capped the scoring with a shot in front to end the match via the mercy rule in the 70th minute. Totel picked up the win in goal.

The Trojans will host Carmel Christian on Thursday before visiting Bishop McGuinness on Monday. The playoffs are scheduled to begin the following week.

“We feel really good going into the next go with it,” Denton said. “It’s just one game at a time.”
