Sutton’s 3-run walkoff HR gives Jones Senior thrilling win over APA in extras

TRENTON | The work Jones Senior’s Holly Sutton has been putting in during the offseason played a big role in helping the Trojans pick up a dramatic victory Thursday.

Sutton hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the eighth as Jones Senior defeated Arendell Parrott 11-10 in a wild contest. The Trojans (4-5) trailed three times in the contest, but rallied to send the game into extras before Sutton’s blast over the centerfield wall helped Jones Senior exact revenge from a 7-4 loss to Arendell Parrott in Kinston on March 16.

“I just gave it all to Jesus,” Sutton said. “We were all praying and I knew if I got a good grip, I could hit it out the park. I’ve been working out like crazy this year and I think God for (the home run).”

Jones Senior did race out to a 3-0 lead in the first on an error and RBI singles by Sutton and Alisha Sawyer before Arendell Parrott fired back. The Patriots (5-3) countered with five runs in the top of the second, with Susana Sualevai connecting on a bases-loaded 2-RBI single and Savannah Hill tying the score on a groundout before Caroline Casey hit a 2-RBI single two batters later.

The Trojans tied the score in the bottom of the second on an RBI grounder from Alexis Metts and another Sutton RBI single, but Arendell Parrott reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth. After an outfield error on a Casey fly ball scored Hill, one batter later, Darci Basden smacked an RBI double to left field to make the score 7-5. Hill added an RBI double in the top of the fifth to put the Patriots up by three.

Jones Senior tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth. After Kristina Lee reached on an error to start the frame, Cassidy Sutton brought her home on an RBI double. Later on, with two on and two outs, Ashley Murphy hit a 2-RBI double to even the game at 8 before getting thrown out at third. The Trojans had a chance to end the game in the bottom of the seventh with two on and two outs, with a wild pitch advanced the runners. Kimora Fryer beat the tag at third base, but she lost her footing, allowing Collins Moore to get a second chance to tag her out and send the game into extras.

In the top of the eighth, Timbely Baugus got two of the first three batters out, but walked Sualavei and Sara Waida to load the bases. Hill took full advantage, hitting a 2-run double down the left-field line to put the Patriots up 10-8.

The lead wouldn’t last for Arendell Parrott. Cassidy Sutton reached on an error and Metts walked, setting up the stage for Holly Sutton, who ended a 4-hit, 5 RBI day but depositing a 1-1 pitch over the fence for the win.

“(Arendell Parrott) is a good ball club and we’re fortunate to beat them,” Jones Senior coach Michael Sutton Jr. said. “We misplaced balls, but we came through when we needed to and got some necessary hits. Our top five (in the lineup) hit really well and pitching-wise, Holly and Timberly helped us keep the game close. I’m proud of the girls for fighting and Holly loves these types of moments.”

For Arendell Parrott coach Matt Beaman, the Patriots were on the other side of the spectrum. On Tuesday, Elizabeth Norris hit a walk-off single to help Arendell Parrott beat Harrells Christian 5-4.

“We just had a reversal of fortunes from Tuesday’s game,” Beaman said. “We played a good ball club, (Holly Sutton) is a great hitter and (Michael Sutton) is a class act.”

Hill went 4-5 with three doubles and 4 RBIs for Arendell Parrott.
