Knights finally get revenge vs. Smith, Trinity Christian
Area Roundup

From staff reports

Down 13 points at halftime against Fayetteville Trinity Christian, the team that just seemed to find a way to win every meeting with Greenfield, the host Knights finally found the answers in a second-half comeback.

Greenfield, which lost 64-63 to Trinity Christian in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A championship game last year, outscored the visiting Knights 16-8 in the fourth quarter on the way to a 70-67 victory. That ended a Trinity Christian winning streak over Greenfield that Knights head coach Rob Salter said might have been as many as six games.

"The first half we were terrible," Salter said. "We were just giving them layups. We didn't compete in the second quarter. I challenged a couple of kids in the locker room and they responded."

Greenfield, now 19-8, trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half and trailed 59-54 after three quarters, but used seven TC turnovers in the fourth quarter to engineer the rally. Senior A.J. Sanders had another double-double for Greenfield, netting 15 points and yanking down 12 rebounds while senior Will Crandell and sophomore Tyler Maye each bucketed 17 points. Freshman Coby White added 10 points.

Junior point guard Dennis Smith Jr., who hit the winning free throws with 7.6 in last year's championship game, had a game-high 21 points. Smith is regarded as one of the top players nationally in his recruiting class. Mike Boykin scored 13 points and Alonzo Tyson added 12 points for the visiting Knights (20-8).

Greenfield is ranked No. 4 among NCISAA 1-A teams while Trinity Christian is third.

The Knights will return to Coastal Plain Independents Conference play at home Thursday against Fayetteville Freedom Christian.
