HIGH POINT, N.C. — On Tuesday, Calvary Day School and Westchester Country Day School matched up in Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference (PTAC) action from WCDS’s Kennedy Field.

The Cougars were able to complete the regular season sweep with a 3-1 result on the road. Calvary Day pushed two goals past Westchester Country Day senior goalkeeper Cook Smith within a three-minute span in the first half and that ended up being enough for the victory.

“I think my guys basically weathered the storm really well,” said Calvary Day head boys soccer coach Ben Kerth. “We passed around them (Westchester Country Day) a lot; tried to get them tired in the second half. We just are super technical and I think when we find those lanes, find those open people that it’s hard for them to keep that high press that they have. We could just knock it (the ball) around, then go ahead and score some goals.”

Calvary Day started the scoring in the 13th minute as Pearce Lowrey (senior) maintained possession past the 18-yard box, then crossed the ball across the face of goal. That is when Josiah Winters (senior) made a touch for midfielder Jalen London to smash home a goal that broke the scoreless deadlock.

Just three minutes later, Winters would increase his season-total to 15 goals by scoring in the 16th minute. He took a shot that ricocheted off a defender’s boot and into the goal. The Cougars had Westchester Country Day reeling at that point by being ahead 2-0.

Westchester Country Day had a few fans in the stands, but many vehicles were parked next to the stadium with parents using their car horns to cheer along. The Wildcats gave the faithful something to be happy about right before the halftime break on a set piece.

Ninth grader Max Verellen sent an aerial service across the face of goal, which found sophomore teammate Bo Brigman for the re-direction past Calvary Day senior goalie Adam Carter. Westchester Country Day was finally on the scoreboard in the 37th minute.

Calvary Day halfway to remaining unbeaten by leading 2-1 at intermission behind quick goals from London (13th minute) and Winters (16th minute).

The Cougars and Wildcats played a rather balanced second half in regards to scoring chances, but Tuesday’s tilt became chippy with many foul calls in the final 20 minutes.

Calvary Day tacked on another goal in the final 15 seconds on a counterattack. Senior midfielder Ryan Connors registered his second assist by finding London, who scored the game’s opening goal, in the box for a left-footed finish as Westchester’s goalie (Smith) was charging away from the net.

The Cougars won the first meeting between the two schools, 4-1. Calvary Day needed three second-half goals to beat Westchester Country Day School in Winston-Salem on Sept. 18.

No. 5 Westchester Country Day (5-2, 4-2 PTAC) is going to host Salem Baptist Christian on Thursday evening (Oct. 8). Kickoff for that contest from Kennedy Field is set for 7 PM.
