Offense aplenty as teams combine for more than 30 shots on goal
Both Coastal Christian and South Brunswick’s boys soccer teams substituted freely for different reasons Tuesday.
Their coaches said those changes proved beneficial in the wake of the Centurions’ 6-4 victory.
For host Coastal Christian (5-2), it meant fresher legs before a stretch of four games in six days. As for the Cougars, they just wanted to dig out of a 5-1 second half hole.
“I threw in the towel a bit, and I wanted to get in some guys who wouldn’t play much,” South Brunswick coach Patrick Lawson said.
The Cougars (2-4-1) used it and the Centurions subbing out five starters to their benefit. Ryland Hawksby posted a hat trick of goals, two coming in the second half.
There was lots of offense to go around: the teams combined for more than 30 shots on goal. Coastal Christian had its own three-goal player Tuesday in Walker Henderson, who had the game’s first two goals, both assisted by Matt Ward.
Henderson was one of the starters who wrapped up his time on the pitch by the 54th minute, just six minutes after his last score made it 5-1.
“I wouldn’t say it was over, but I knew we had a good chance of winning,” Henderson said. “I was taking in what the coach thought, and if I had to go in I would.”
Ward tallied two assists and two goals. He scored off a free kick in the 65th to give the Centurions a three-goal advantage. Hawksby followed with his own shot in the back of the net and the Cougars stayed in contention.
Three more South Brunswick opportunities were missed, including a cross made to a wide open goal.
“We have a lot of respect for South Brunswick, and they have a good team,” Coastal Christian coach Mike Scheffel said. “Obviously it got close down the stretch, which was good for our players.”
And a great experience for ones who have little to no varsity experience. He inserted freshman Nathan D’Erminio at keeper in the second half, and he responded with seven saves.
Half of Tuesday’s goals came either via corner or free kick and five players scored: Henderson, Hawksby, Ward, the Centurions’ Chris Davis and the Cougars’ John Pratt.
John Blackburn had two assists in the Coastal Christian effort.
“Every year they’re a great team, so it was good to see us battle,” Lawson said.
