Greenfield, North Johnston still winless after 2-2 draw

By Tom HamSenior Staff Writer

Neither Greenfield nor North Johnston owned a 2016 win entering its appearance in The Brittany XII during Friday night’s second session on Gillette Soccer Complex Field No. 1.

And when the final whistle sounded, both Greenfield of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference and North Johnston of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2-A Eastern Plains Conference remained winless.

The Wilson Times readership-area foes battled to a 2-2 draw — leaving the Lady Knights at 0-2-1 and North Johnston at 0-3-2.

Greenfield competed a player down the final 25 minutes and, trailing 2-1, the Lady Panthers capitalized with slightly over 16 minutes remaining. Freshman Melanie Barbee served the ball to the mouth of the Greenfield goal and senior Cassidy Dowling finished.

Both teams generated legitimate threats the final five minutes, but goalkeepers Summer Hassan, a freshman, of Greenfield and senior Morgan Foster of North Johnston responded.

The Lady Panthers scored first with some six minutes elapsed as sophomore Barrett Davis converted an assist from sophomore Mary Catherine Davis. Greenfield answered on junior Samantha Wainwright’s goal with slightly over 12 minutes left in the opening half and on junior Anna Merritt Hauser’s perfectly placed direct kick from some 20 yards out with 32:31 showing.

"We feel good about the tie,” expressed North Johnston head coach Jody Edwards. "Greenfield has a strong tradition. We are starting to gell as a team. The girls really love this tourney; they are so excited and always step it up a level. We’re tickled.”

Commented Greenfield head coach Randal Mendoza: "We would have liked to have gotten one by them and gotten the win. But the red card kind of contained us a little bit. We are taking good steps to where we want to be, but we have come far from where we’ve been.”
