GREENFIELD’S PATH

It hasn’t been smooth sailing in 2020 for Greenfield School, the reigning North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champions.

While the Knights aren’t out of the running in terms of defending that title by any stretch, the postseason path could be made a bit more arduous if the seeding committee thinks less of them for not claiming the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference title. By design, the nonleague slate was enhanced by third-year head coach Eric Nguyen with an experienced group returning.

Following a 2-0 start, a three-game losing streak for the Knights where their team chemistry was put to the test has Greenfield staring at a 4-3 record and a 1-1 ledger in the CPIC. The conference setback came at the hands of 2-A Richlands Liberty Christian (4-2, 1-1), a first-year CPIC member who will come to Forbes Field on Thursday.

Accordingly, it stands to be a challenging close in the conference for Greenfield.

Awaiting are two games against archrival Wayne Country Day on Friday in Goldsboro and then again one week later on Forbes Field to close the regular season.

The 2-A Chargers of veteran head coach Steve Ellis have played just three games with a 1-0 CPIC showing, but have four of their five games remaining against CPIC opponents — two against Greenfield, one versus Wayne Christian and another against Liberty Christian.

Interestingly, the Knights have yet to oppose an NCISAA 1-A school this season — of which there are just 23 that sponsor multiple sports. That won’t come until Oct. 15, when they host Henderson Crossroads Christian in a nonconference encounter.
