Cougars, Cowgirls battle to 4-4 tie

Michael Lindsay | HPE

HIGH POINT -The High Point Christian soccer team kept responding as Southwest Guilford kept trying to put it away.

The Cougars - keyed by Emily Barrett and Maggie Williams - overcame a two-goal deficit in the second half to equal the Cowgirls 4-4 in a meeting of state-ranked teams Friday at Southwest.

"The biggest thing we focused on after our game Tuesday was what our response has to be," HPCA coach Austin Beck said. "Whether it's after getting scored on or after a game in which we didn't perform well.

"We talked about: What is our response going to be when we don't do something right or we get scored on? And that was kind of the overall focus of the game: How are we going to respond after Tuesday?"

Barrett scored all four goals for the Cougars (3-2-1), who trailed 4-2 with just over 30 minutes left in the game, while Williams dished three assists. McKenzie Mathis also had an assist.

Kylie Jones scored twice while Amanda Barata scored once for Southwest (4-1-1), which led 2-0 within the first 11 minutes of the game and 3-1 into halftime. Hannah Carr and Bri O'Connor each had one assist.

But after the Cowgirls, ranked No. 12 among state 4A public schools, built their lead in the first half, High Point Christian, ranked No. 12 among state 3A private schools, answered well in the second half to pull even.

Barrett twice took passes from Williams in behind the defense for breakaway goals to pull within 3-2 with 34:33 left and within 4-3 with 30:25. Then, with 6:25 left, Barrett took a sliding shot near the top of the box to tie it.

"We were just giving the ball away (in the first half) in dangerous spots in the field," Beck said. "And we weren't really being active off the ball, which was the result of us giving the ball away.

"We weren't really trusting in each other or working hard for each other - that was the big thing. Once we changed that in the second half, the game kind of flipped around for us."
Southwest did have a pretty good look to regain the lead on a free kick just outside the box with 4:15 left. But the shot was off the mark, and the teams ended regulation tied.

Nadia Threatt made two saves for the Cougars on 15 shots, while Ellen Druebbisch made one save for the Cowgirls on six shots.

High Point Christian next plays Tuesday at Greensboro Day. Southwest plays Monday at home against North Davidson.

Cowgirls coach Jennifer Stillman declined to comment after the game.
