While the Kerr-Vance Academy girls’ soccer team has excelled in a number of areas this season, coming back from deficits hasn’t been one of them.

The Lady Spartans hosted crosstown rival Crossroads Christian on Tuesday and less than 15 minutes into the contest found themselves in a hole trailing, 2-0

“I was worried,” Kerr-Vance head coach Amy Peralta said. “I was very worried because we played them within one (goal) the last game.”

Kerr-Vance would get on the scoreboard 23 minutes into the game on freshman Riley Short’s first of two goals and eventually pull away for a 4-2 victory.

“We needed to win today,” Peralta said. “We’ve won a couple by just one and that seems to have been enough. But I’m glad that we won by more than one.”

Crossroads head coach Josh Bogle was encouraged with his team’s start, however, admitted that the dial switched once his group jumped ahead 2-0.

“I think after we scored that second goal we kind of relaxed and I think the opposite happened with KVA,” Bogle said. “The second goal went in and they realized they have to play. So there was a big shift in momentum after that second goal.

“I think a lot of that’s from experience, thinking that the game is basically over. You’re up 2-0, but that’s far from the case.”

Crossroads’ Madison Moyer would score the Lady Colts’ first goal 10 minutes into the contest and four and a half minutes later, Kyra Corrigan scored on a breakaway.

Yet that would be all for Crossroads.

Short scored her first goal off a rebound and Kerr-Vance trailed just 2-1 at the intermission. Less than two minutes into the second half, Spartans sophomore Meagan O’Leary scored off an assist from Short and the game was tied.

Short’s second goal put the hosts ahead for good when she scored off an assist from freshman Nicole Dunkley around the 51st minute.

“Riley plays consistently every single game,” Peralta said. “She doesn’t let up. If she doesn’t think she can get a ball, she’s still going to go hard all the time.”

Kerr-Vance’s final goal would come from a far distance when senior Rachel Ross assisted to Dunkley at the 76-minute mark.

“I think the turnaround was that in the second half we got to the 50-50 balls,” Peralta said. “We were getting the 50-50 balls and that was huge. Between 50-50 balls and then people just keep continuing to score.”

The game was the second and final one between the pair of foes this season as Kerr-Vance edged out a 3-2 win at Crossroads back on March 26. In that game, the Lady Colts also established a lead before seeing it slip away.

“We led both of them,” Bogle said. “Obviously this one was a little more dramatic being up 2-0 and then losing 4-2. They’re both rough.”

With the regular season wrapping up Friday for Kerr-Vance, Peralta said her team is aiming to go 2-0 in their remaining pair of games. If they can do that, they’d essentially have a chance to host a state playoff game.

“I told the girls, ‘we’ll get in,’” Peralta said. “But I’m like, ‘do you want to go across the state?’ We could go to Hickory or we could go somewhere crazy.

“So I’m like, ‘the better you finish, you might have a home game.”’

Kerr-Vance (9-7) is back in action at Rocky Mount Academy today, while Crossroads Christian (5-8) next plays Friday at Epiphany.
