Mr. 1K! Charlotte Latin’s Lee Horton wins 1,000th game in Hawks shutout win BY CAMERON WILLIAMS MARCH 29, 2022 9:55 PM
In a dominating 4-0 win over the Hibriten Panthers Tuesday night, Charlotte Latin soccer coach Lee Horton got his 1,000th career win at the school. Horton, who has coached at another school prior, had won his 1,000th game six years ago.
“Five or six years ago when I got my one-thousandth total from my two different schools, I figured well that’s it,” Horton said.
“When my sports information director came up to me a few weeks ago and said, ‘you realize you’re about to get your one-thousandth just at Charlotte Latin right,’ I’m going, ‘No way.’” Horton was humble in his approach to the accomplishment.
“It’s like I told the girls; you know I haven’t won a single game,” Horton said. “I haven’t played in any of them. The players have won 1,000 games and I have coached a lot of great players here.”
The first half was dominated by the Hawks as they took a total of 18 shots, with 10 of them being on goal. It seemed as if the ball was on the Panthers’ side of the field the entire half. Hibriten wouldn’t attempt a shot in the first half.
The first score came with just under 30 minutes remaining in the first half as Mary Schleusner got the cross into Brooke Bellavia for the score. Bellavia was able to bend the ball around the outstretched arms of the Panthers’ goalkeeper, Rylee Conard.
Not too much time passed by when the Hawks found themselves on the attack again, as they were for the majority of the first half, and Ella Smith executed an excellent corner kick, setting up freshman Eleanor Fisher for the score.
The second half was much of the same dominance by Charlotte Latin as they would score two more goals both by Fisher.
“I’m really proud of how we improved from the first half to the second half,” Fisher said. “I owe it to my team for all the assists, our speed of play was really good, we worked as a team and I am just really proud of all of us and the environment we created.”
Fisher also spoke about what it meant to be a part of coach Horton’s one-thousandth win at Charlotte Latin.
“It makes me really happy that I contributed to this, especially in my first year,” Fisher said. “I am happy to see everyone so happy for him and celebrate together.”
