Lee Christian falls in home opener

Despite the final score of Lee Christian’s home opener in soccer Thursday evening, head coach Demarie Martin quickly told her team that she was proud of their effort.
There was never much chance the 1A Lady Falcons were going to upset St. Mary’s School, a 4A team from the Raleigh area, and they didn’t.
The Saints pulled away late in the match and ended it with a few minutes remaining as a 10-1 victory.
However, there was more to it than that. Lee came into the match with just 12 players, and took the fight to the visitors for most of the contest, remaining competitive with a team that was deeper, bigger, and stronger than the Lady Falcons.
Taylor Smith got a goal early on, and even when St. Mary’s asserted itself, it was still leading just 5-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining. It took a flurry of scores against a worn-down Lee Christian back line to pull away.
The Lady Falcons have embarked on an ambitious early-season slate of matches, which began with the season opener at Cape Fear Christian, a much-improved team from last year when it lost to Lee.
Lee Christian traveled to 4A Ravenscroft on Friday, visits 2A Burlington School Monday, and next Friday, finally plays a conference foe—last year’s state semifinalists from Grace Christian, who are even stronger this year.
Several more matches with larger schools dot the remainder of the schedule, and Lee will hope to gain experience from these matches that will help the team in conference play.
The complete roster includes Angelina Brenner, Jessica Holder, Kaycey Brown, Meredith McLean, Julie Buie, Kelcey King, Bethany Smith, Madison Roberts, Logan Mitchell, Jamiya Graham, Karsyn Cardon and Taylor Smith.
