CCS falls to St. Thomas More Academy in home opener

HENDERSON — The Crossroads Christian women’s soccer team got off to a rough start to begin the 2021 season, as they fell to St. Thomas More Academy by a score of 11-2 on Thursday evening.

Although head coach Holden Coghill expected some issues in his team’s first game, he believed that an unfortunate set of circumstances surrounding CCS’ goalkeeping situation in the first half ultimately hindered them from being far more competitive than they were.

“We had that gut punch 30 seconds in when our goalkeeper Justice Simmons separated her shoulder,” Coghill said. “Luckily she was able to pop it back in and play the second half, but we had to throw in a seventh grader with no experience, but I’m proud of the way the girls responded despite the adversity.”

Haley Reese had to serve as CCS’ goalkeeper with Simmons getting her shoulder tended to on the sidelines. Reese managed to make a couple of solid saves for her team, but St. Thomas More was able to navigate their way past her for six first half goals.

When Simmons returned to the game, CCS showcased more composure and efficiency on defense, but St. Thomas More maintained control of the contest with two more goals, including one that came from the far corner, giving them an 8-0 advantage.

One more goal from St. Thomas More would have ended the game by mercy rule, but CCS stepped up their aggression as St. Thomas More got slightly fatigued. Junior Tori Renna would get CCS on the board by a penalty kick before adding another one with just under 15 minutes remaining.

CCS attempted to keep the momentum going in the final minutes with several more pushes up the field, but their defense broke down and surrendered three more goals to cap off a disappointing start to the year for the program.

Even though CCS ended up losing by nine points, Coghill was proud of the energy that his players brought to the game on Thursday and is optimistic that the mixture of youth and experience on the roster will gradually mesh together and produce some victories throughout the year.

“We have a strong schedule in my view, but we have plenty of games that I think we can end up being on the opposite end of a scoreline like today,” Coghill said. “I’m looking for my girls to be diverse against tough opposition and more expansive when we play competition our level.”

CCS will remain at home for their next game on Tuesday at 4 p.m., which will take place against Cape Fear Christian Academy.
