Wayne Country Day beats Wayne Christian

Wayne Country Day shut out Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference rival Wayne Christian 7-0 Tuesday afternoon.
“Because this was a conference game our motivation is we have to pick up a win regardless of what the score is. It could be 1-0, 2-0, or in today’s case 7-0 as long as we get the win,” said Wayne Country Day head coach Steve Ellis. “The boys know what they need to do.”
The Chargers have now won 13 games in a row and have outscored opponents 46-7 on the soccer pitch this season.
WCDS got off to an impressive start scoring their first goal in the third minute of the game.
Nehemiya Shaw passed the ball to David Gurley who worked his way inside the box and knocked in his point-blank shot.
Wayne Christian played tough, but were simply overpowered the by the Chargers.
“Credit to Wayne Christian they’re a lot more organized this year than they were last year,” said Ellis.
The Eagles failed to get a shot on goal in the first half.
In the 21st minute Marquise Newell ran down the right side of the field weaving through the Wayne Christian defenders and drilled the ball into the net to put the Chargers up 2-0.
Wayne Country Day went up 3-0 in the 37th minute when Shaw broke through Wayne Christian’s back line and scored from inside the box.
One minute later Shaw scored again to make the score 4-0.
In the second half the Chargers kept their feet on the gas and dominated the Eagles.
“Wayne Country Day has a pretty good team,” said Wayne Christian head coach Patrick Schultze. “We’re banged and bruised, it’s not the outcome we wanted but we’ll keep on moving.
