HIGH POINT —
The Wesleyan Christian boys soccer team scored twice in the first 7 ½ minutes of the game, controlled possession for most of the game and rolled past Gaston Day 6-0 on Friday in the Westchester Invitational at Kennedy Field.
Luke Manring scored two goals while Caleb Compton had a goal and an assist to lead the Trojans (1-0), who are the defending NCISAA 3A state champions and are ranked No. 3 nationally.
Austin Ash, Grant Edwards and Malik Brahim also had a goal apiece, while Evan Allred had two assists for Wesleyan, which led 4-0 at halftime. Wes Williams and Gyslain Ndayikengurukiye each had one assist.
“I was pleased with the way we started the game,” Trojans coach Scott Reitnour said. “We’ve been inconsistent thus far. And, so, I think as we become a bit more mature and a bit more seasoned some of those peaks and valleys will flatten out.
“But we have a lot of younger players who are finding their roles on the team. So, as we get some minutes and some games under our belt, then I think we’ll find that. But the start was a good start.”
Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead 1 minute, 34 seconds into the game when Allred was fouled making a run in the penalty area and Manring made the ensuing penalty kick. Six minutes later, Manring curled in a long shot inside the far post for a 2-0 lead.
“I thought we played well,” said Manring, a senior. “Our goal every game and every practice is to play to a standard. And that standard is perfection. That was in everyone’s minds. And I thought that, as a cohesive unit, we exercised exactly that. ...
“It was a very good start. To start the first five minutes with a goal is the best thing you can hope for. And earning that penalty and me scoring put us in a very good position to start the game.”
Ash scored on a second-chance opportunity in front with 14:48 left in the half. Compton then scored off a header in the box following a long throw-in with less than two minutes left in the half.
Brahim and Edwards tacked on goals in the second half, while the Trojans’ defense, backed up by goalkeepers Michael Buckland and Connor Smith, held Gaston Day to just two shots for the game.
Wesleyan will face crosstown foe Westchester Country Day in the invitational’s championship at 5 p.m. today at Westchester.
