HIGH POINT — Westchester Country Day would’ve like to have connected on a few more opportunities. But, in the end, twice was enough.
The Wildcats, dominating possession against a packed-in defense, scored once in each half to defeat American Hebrew 2-0 in NCISAA Triad Athletic 1A/2A boys soccer Monday at Westchester’s Kennedy Field.
“I think tonight we showed we’ve played a lot of games over the last couple weeks,” Westchester coach Adam Schwartz said. “And they played very defensive, so give Mike Johnston credit. They sat back, bunkered in — and there are games like that.
“We knew they were going to play like that, so they did a great job of sticking to their game plan. We just need to capitalize better on the chances we get. … But a win’s a win in the conference. So, we’re happy with the win, but we have to get better.”
George Culp and Erik Bauer each scored a goal for the Wildcats (11-0 overall, 7-0 TAC), who finished with a 38-2 advantage in shots for the game — limiting the Eagles to just one shot in each half. Zach Beale assisted on both goals.
Westchester maintained possession for most of the first half but couldn’t quite break through. But, in the 39th minute, Beale served in a ball from the right side that Culp knocked in to give the Wildcats the lead just before halftime.
“I just saw him going down the line, and he played a nice ball in on my head,” said Culp, a freshman who was also celebrating his 15th birthday Monday. “It was open, so I put it in. … We’d missed a couple open ones, so it was a big relief to knock it in.
“We’re playing awesome so far,” he said of the season overall. “I guess everything’s been pretty comfortable. So, we’re ready for a test. We’re definitely training hard. We have a really great brotherhood. So, when we get together and play well, it works out really well.”
In the second half, Westchester, which had three shots hit off the goal frame in the game, again couldn’t quite capitalize on its oppor tunities. Bauer, however, broke through in the 62nd minute off a corner kick that bounced around in front.
Davis Privette, who did not have to make a save, was in goal throughout for the Wildcats’ eighth
shutout of the season. American Hebrew dropped to 1-6-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the conference.
“So, we’re 11-0 with our last nonconference game upcoming — a big nonconference game at Davidson Day,” Schwartz said. “That’s always a tough place to play, and they’re a physical team. So, we’re just going to go down there and try to play hard.”
Westchester will play its next three games on the road, starting today at Davidson Day, before finishing the regular season Oct. 6 at home against Caldwell Academy.
