Trojans fall against Forbush

HIGH POINT - The Wesleyan Christian softball team wants to face good teams that will provide a challenge, and Forbush was exactly that.
The Trojans had strong moments throughout but allowed five runs in the third and fourth innings that were too much to overcome in falling 5-3 against the Falcons in a meeting of two of the area's top programs Monday at Wesleyan.

"I think we played good," Wesleyan coach Donald Brewer said. "We won the other day, and I got on the girls pretty hard because we made a bunch of mistakes. I told them that if they give good teams extra chances with errors, they'll capitalize on them. We made one error in that one inning, and they scored three runs.
"That's the difference when you play good competition. But I'd rather play good competition than play someone where you know you'll win. So, I told the girls I was more proud today getting beat than I was winning the other day. From top to bottom, I thought we got better today."
Geena Autry and Katie Bailiff each hit a solo home run for the Trojans (3-1), who won last year's NCISAA 3A state championship. Bailiff added a double and a run, while Reagan Bray and Anna Robichaud also had two hits each.
Taylor Wooten went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run to lead Forbush (3-0), which reached last year's NCHSAA 2A regionals and is ranked No. 6 among state 2A teams, while Allison Mitchell went 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI.
Wesleyan scored two runs in the first inning to lead 2-0, but the Falcons tied it with two runs in the third and grabbed the lead with three runs in the fourth. They had five hard hits - all with runners on - and capitalized on one error to lead 5-2.
"They got a couple hits," Donald Brewer said, "and that one inning we had an error. That would've been the second out. Then they got a run that would've been the third out and scored two more after that.
"That's part of the game - you're going to make mistakes. But that was against the bottom (of the order). So, when they got back to the top, they hit it. You can't take anything away from them. They have a very good team."
The Trojans pulled within 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh on Bailiff's home run and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. But they lined out to center field to end the game.
Kayla Brewer (2-1) took the loss in five innings for Wesleyan, which will be off until it begins a stretch of five games in six days starting Monday at home against Metrolina Christian. Sydney Miller picked up the complete-game win for Forbush.
