Carmel Christian wins third straight, stops United Faith

While Charlotte was preparing for an ice storm and freezing weather, the Carmel Christian Cougars stayed hot Thursday night with an 88-76 road win over the United Faith Christian Academy Falcons.
The Cougars (15-8, 9-0) won their third straight and stayed unbeaten in the NCISAA Southern Piedmont Conference at 9-0. Freshman Myles Pierre led Carmel Christian with a game-high 28 points. Three other Cougars finished in double figures including Mac Brydon, Zach Prevette and Brett Swilling, who scored 15, 12 and 11 respectively.
“I was just trying to get in the gym; put up a lot of shots to try and win the game, and my shot was falling in,” said Pierre. “I work on shots where people are in my face, so it’s not any different in a game than it is in practice.”
United Faith (3-7, 3-4) also had four players in double figures, led by Jason Tate’s team-high 23 points. Jonathan Hicklin had 21 for the Falcons with Andrew Norton adding 14 and Darius Cook 11.
The Cougars’ biggest lead was nine in the first half, but the Falcons kept battling to trail by seven at halftime. Carmel Christian used its depth to pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 17 points midway through the fourth quarter before winning by 12.
Three who mattered
Myles Pierre: Carmel Christian freshman shooting guard had a game-high 28 points, which included going 9-of-10 at the free-throw line.
Andrew Norton: United Faith junior guard had three 3-pointers for the Falcons while finishing with 14 points.
Mac Brydon: The Cougars’ 6-10 senior center was Carmel Christian’s second-leading scorer with 15 points and made it tough underneath on United Faith’s big men.

“We’ve been blessed to have some talent. A lot of the talent we have we’ve developed so that’s even better. To see these guys grow and to see these guys mature on the basketball floor, they’ve dedicated themselves to the game. We’re getting older and that’s good. I can sleep a little better at night.” – Carmel Christian coach Joshua Coley on the development of his fourth-year basketball program.
What’s next
With most of Friday’s games being canceled due to weather, Carmel Christian will play next this Tuesday at Woodlawn HS (Davidson) at 7:30 p.m., while United Faith will play Tuesday at Statesville Christian at 7 p.m.
