It was the same story on Tuesday night, but this time it was the Griffins coming out on the better end of the 3-2 decision to capture the SCISA 2A state volleyball championship at Dorman High School.
Spartanburg Day dropped the first game 25-16 before rallying to take Games 2 and 3 in 25-20 and 25-16 decisions. SCA rallied for a 25-23 win in Game 4, but the Griffins took the decisive game by scoring the final three points to win it 15-13. Sophomore middle hitter Allie Lockman recorded the winner.
"I was thinking 'Did this just happen?'" Spartanburg Day coach Mandy Johnson said. "It happened that it was Allie. No one deserved it more. Honestly, I still can't believe that it happened. That was great volleyball by both teams. I've never seen so much grit from both teams since I've been coaching."
Lockman said she knew the game-winner was about to happen as soon as she touched the ball.
"I saw the middle wide open," she said. "When I hit I usually go sideline, but there was no doubt. We knew we had to be patient, and that comes along with practice. It's beyond amazing to win."
