Sherrill sinks free throws to reach 1,000, leads Lions to win

With 2:43 left in the first half of Tuesday’s game, Mallory Sherrill stepped to the free throw line and sank both free throws.

Those were monumental points for the Statesville Christian School senior. They marked the 999 and 1,000 points of her high school career and the 18 points she scored Tuesday led the Lions in a 41-24 win over Westminster Catawba Christian Academy.

Sherrill came into Tuesday night’s matchup with the Indians needing 13 points to reach the milestone. After reaching 11 points, via field goals and free throws, Sherrill went up for a layup and drew a foul.

Sherrill’s Coach Mark McCollum jokingly predicted what would happen next. “Here comes two air balls,” he said with a laugh.

Sherrill looked calm as she sank both free throws, but after the game, she admitted she was nervous. She said she was glad to get the points in the first half. “I felt a big relief,” she said.

The game stopped to acknowledge Sherrill’s accomplishment. Head of School for SCS, Dr. Barry Redmond, said no one was more deserving of the honor. Sherrill has played basketball for SCS since the eighth grade and is also a soccer player. “She is an outstanding student and a wonderful example of a Christian girl,” he said.

Her family held up signs congratulating her on the milestone.

Sherrill was thrilled with reaching the 1,000 point mark. “I fleet very bless to achieve that accomplishment,” she said.

Back on the court, the one-two punch of Sherrill and Jordan Ellis powered the Lions to the 41-24 win. The two accounted for 28 of those 41 points.

The game was close in the first quarter, with the Lions on top 12-11. They scored just five points in the second but held the Indians to four points in both the second and third quarters. The Lions were held to just two points in the fourth but the Lions lead was insurmountable at that point.

The Lions are now 5-3 on the season.

BOYS GAME GOES TO OVERTIME

The Lions looked poised to get their first victory of the season, leading by as many as 21 points at the end of the first.

But the Indians chipped away at that lead, climbing in front with 6:52 left in the game at 43-41 on a three-pointer by Josh Whitfield.

At the end of regulation, the score stood at 51 all and a four-minute overtime period started.

he Indians Courtland Williams hit a shot in the opening seconds of overtime.

The Lions countered with Adam Cronce who drove the ball inside the paint with 51.7 seconds left, connected on a shot and drew a foul. Cronce sank the free throw to put the Lions up 54-53.

The Indians, with seconds remaining on the clock, connected on two field goals for the 57-54 win.
