Doubles sweep triggers Lady Knights’ exit
From staff reports
MERRY HILL — After a pair of tough breaks in doubles, the Greenfield School girls tennis team couldn’t recover in a 5-2 loss to host Lawrence Academy in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A semifinals on Tuesday.
With doubles play starting the match, the Lady Knights led on both the Nos. 2 and 3 courts but couldn’t finish either in getting swept in doubles. Luisa Lee-Mae Pridgen came up short 9-7 at No. 2 against Lawrence’s Perris Clayton-Annie Hayes Trowell while Greenfield’s Alex Garner-Maya Genge fell in a tiebreaker at No. 3 to Lucy Spruill-Addie Phelps.
Down 3-0 starting singles, the Lady Knights, seeded No. 3, got wins in straight sets at No. 2 from Luisa Lee and No. 3 from Libby Eagles. But after No. 1 Ryann Jennings fell to Lawrence’s Emma Cobb, the No. 2 Lady Warriors clinched the win with Phelps’ 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Genge at No. 6.
In the two singles matches that were not completed Garner won her first set against Lucy Spruill 6-3 while Pridgen dropped her opening set to Trowell but led in the second set when the match ended.
“Alex would have pulled out her final singles match of her high school career for sure,” said Lady Knights head coach.
Lawrence will face top-seeded The Oakwood School of Greenville in Saturday’s championship match. Greenfield finished 8-4.
“I am very proud of this team and all of their efforts!” Morrison said. “We will continue to work on that mental fortitude and confidence.”
Morrison could have most of the players back next season with just Jennings, Garner and Sallie Gliarmis graduating.
