Youthful Knights exit at hands of Oakwood
GREENVILLE — A youthful Greenfield School boys tennis team, giving up several grades at most of the seeds, were blanked 9-0 by unbeaten Oakwood School in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A quarterfinals Tuesday.
Oakwood (12-0), the No. 2 seed, will take on No. 3 Wayne Country Day, which downed No. 7 Lawrence Academy on Tuesday, in the state semifinals Friday at Barton College Tennis Complex.
The Knights, seeded No. 7 in the eight-team bracket, concluded 5-9 in the first season of head coach Robert Cunningham. Unlike the Eagles, who have two seniors and at least two juniors in their starting six, the Knights’ only upperclassman is junior Ryan Adcox at No. 2 singles.
“The bright side for us, and it has been all year, is that our entire team is coming back next year,” said Cunningham, a former Knights standout in his junior year as an East Carolina University student. “We knew we weren’t contending for a state championship. Our goals were to get better and I think we accomplished that.”
Cunningham assured that despite the grind of traveling between Wilson and Greenville, he planned to return as girls and boys tennis coach at his alma mater for the 2015-16 school year.
“Absolutely!” he said. “I loved working with the kids and obviously I love tennis. I’m having a lot of fun and hopefully they’re having fun learning from me.”
